Finished Objects

I knit up two hats and two scarves for The Salted Dog customers before the holidays, bumping several in-progress projects, including Bama's Placket Neck Sweater which is still mid-sleeve. Between Bama watching, holiday-ing, and general housework, my queue came to a halt. Today I finished my niece's Toast, my mom's scarf, and a fix to my own Toast. I tossed in a picture of one of the Tasty scarves and Bama's stocking.

Toast: Classic Elite Lush with Inca Alpaca stripes. The stripes are not symmetrical on the warmers.

Bama's stocking, made from a felted sweater (the red) and the collar of a fabulous sweater I bought in Paris in 2000 (for the millennium New Year's Eve celebration). The arms have the same crazy faux fur. I'm making her some rock star pants out of those bits (sometime this week). I still have some trimming to do for her stocking. I have a bell to add and maybe another doodad. We'll see. 

The Salted Dog: Open for Business

I've been kicking around sketches (and attempts) at hats and scarves for a few years, now. And, several months ago I came up with an idea for something I'd like to make and sell which necessitated my sewing class to learn/polish techniques I didn't really have.

But last April, when Mister and I were on our first date night, a woman asked me about a scarf I was wearing and commissioned me to make one for her.

Thus, The Salted Dog was born. I'm working on the clever backstory that explains the origins of The Salted Dog, since telling people that I could make it work on etsy and in gmail is insufficient and, well, lame.

I've sold a couple of scarves, including this one:  and the one above.

They are not technically difficult, but they are comprised of roughly 50 different yarns, give or take, and are knit lengthwise. My own is about six and a half feet long. These are about five and a half feet long.

I whipped up a hat for Bama, which turned into potential commission sales at a local children's store, but I dithered with to pom (her suggestion) or not to pom (my preference) and here we are, the day before Thanksgiving, and I still have the hats in hand. So I'm putting them up on etsy to see what happen.

There are three available now. They all fit Bama, loosely, so are more for an 18 month to five year old head, and that really depends on your kid's head. Bama, for example, has a huge head (97 percentile) so she runs big.

One version features five poms strung around the base to the crown of the hat. Another has just one wee pom on top. The third hat was machine stitched for secure closing (the other two are woven in ... 98 ends woven in). The poms  on it are more like baubles and are part of the yarn (Be Sweet's Special Knobby). The last hat in the photos below (with the baubles) has a roll brim vs. the ribbed on the other two. I'm going ribbed. And, look for yarn splicing to come otherwise you'll hear me singing 100 ends of yarns to weave in ...

 

I have four hats in the works now (gifts for a family). Got to get crack-a-lackin'.
