A couple of days after G2 headed back to California (sniff, sniff), our storage facility called in a panic; a pipe had broken, somewhere, flooding the building's entire first floor. There's never been any incident of any kind in this place. Aunty Cake's grandmother stored stuff here, the woman in the locker next to ours had been with it for 16 years.
What to do. When we moved to New York, we left about half our house behind. All the big furniture. Mister's beautiful cherry wood post-college desk; my stepfather's armoire; our leather sofa; all of my curriculum; clothes I'd forgotten I owned; my wedding dress; Mister's wood-working tools, including electric saws.
After hanging up with the storage people, we started making calls. Saturday in California. Who would be available? Who could we ask to ditch plans?
Uncle Nellie drove over immediately, to make a quick assessment and rescue any papers we might have lost. Aunty Cake went for the second shift on Sunday, showing up to greet the movers who'd help shift what wasn't damaged to another locker away from the waters.

One of us had to go, so I took Rabbit to California for a 36-hour tour.
We headed off in a car service on Sunday for an early morning run to JFK.
Mister sent a photo of the girl. I left her in tears at the window. She tried to be brave, but was weighed down by panic. She knew the locker had flooded, but didn't understand what that meant. I think she pictured the locker opening, water washing over me, taking me away from her. Uncle Nellie called to tell her the waters were gone, I showed her photos before I left so she could see the floor of the locker and how it was already drying out. No luck. Mister did the full-court press to help her forget: Bouchon Bakery, Big Apple Circus, Heckscher Playground, Ippudo, il laboratorio del gelato.
Once she lost her fear, the circus was magic.

Meanwhile, Rabbit played with the free headphones for about 45 minutes straight. The kid's got amazing fine motor skills/finger dexterity.
Uncle J picked us up at the airport!
